Getting started

  1. Clear your space. You will crouch, reach to both sides and drop to your knees to block, so play in a clear area inside your headset's boundary, with nothing within arm's reach around you.
  2. Launch the app and get into your catching stance. Pull the trigger to leave the title card; the app places you behind the plate from where you are.
  3. Calibrate your hands. The first time you play, CALIBRATE HANDS starts on its own: a mitt and a fist float in front of you. Slide your glove-hand controller into the mitt where your hand would sit, put the other controller inside the fist, hold still and pull the trigger.
  4. Pick your session and press START. The menu has Pitching, Location, Batter, Catcher and Audio & Display tabs. Your choices are remembered for next time.
  5. Catch, then read your card. After every pitch a technique card shows what you did right and what cost you points. Press B/Y any time to pause and open the menu.

Questions and answers

What do I need, and how much room?

A Meta Quest 2 or newer headset (Quest 2, 3, 3S or Pro) and both controllers. The mitt is on one controller and your bare (throwing) hand is on the other; choose which hand wears the mitt under Catcher › Catcher throws.

Set up your boundary in an open space where you can crouch, shift side to side, reach out wide and drop to your knees without touching anything. Move furniture, and keep pets and people out of the area. A soft floor or knee pads make blocking practice more comfortable. Stop and take a break if you feel unwell.

The mitt doesn't line up with my hand

Open the menu (B/Y) and choose CALIBRATE HANDS. Slide your glove-hand controller into the floating mitt where your hand sits in a real mitt, put the other controller inside the fist, hold still and pull the trigger. The mitt is shown in the receiving position: pocket to the pitcher, fingers to the side.

RESET HANDS forgets the calibration and returns the mitt and hand to the default pose. From the default pose you can also hold Grip on the mitt hand and flick the thumbstick left or right to roll the mitt in 5° steps.

Turning on Catcher › Mitt guide labels shows FINGERS, HEEL and THUMB tags around the mitt, so you can see which way the app thinks it is pointing.

I'm in the wrong spot or too high behind the plate

Get into your catching stance, look toward the pitcher and press A/X (or RECENTER in the menu). The app moves the plate to you from your current position and height, so recenter while you are crouched, not standing.

Do I have to squeeze the trigger to catch?

That is up to you. Catcher › Squeeze to catch has three options:

  • Off: a ball that reaches the pocket stays in the mitt without a squeeze.
  • On (pull trigger): squeeze the mitt as the ball arrives or it pops out. The timing is generous: a squeeze up to about a second before the ball arrives counts, and the ball waits in the pocket for about half a second for a late one.
  • Full auto: the mitt closes on the ball by itself, and any ball that touches the mitt (pocket, edge, heel or back) is caught. Only a ball that misses the mitt entirely gets past you.

Whatever the setting, the trigger or grip always closes the mitt.

How does scoring work?

Every pitch is called a strike or a ball from where it crosses the front of the plate, and a technique card grades the rep line by line, the way a catching coach would:

  • Receiving and framing (up to 19 points): give a target, relax the mitt down in the windup, start at or outside the ball, work through it toward the zone in one fluent motion, then stick it and hold. A borderline pitch with a good frame is called STRIKE — FRAMED! and earns a +3 bonus.
  • Blocking (up to 18 points): balls in the dirt are graded on keeping the ball in front, taking it off the chest protector, getting down, staying centered, glove in the dirt between the knees, bare hand behind it and chin tucked.
  • The runner: any ball that gets behind you moves the base runner up one base. A run scored costs you 20 points, and a new runner starts on first.

Catcher › Scoring sets how strictly technique is judged: Beginner is forgiving, Advanced tightens glove stillness, timing and mitt angle. Pitching › Difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard) changes the pitches themselves. Your session total and the summary of your last session appear under the menu buttons.

How do I switch to softball or change the stadium?

Pitching › Sport switches between Baseball and Fastpitch softball. Softball changes the whole field: a 12-inch yellow ball, a pitcher's circle at 43 feet, a windmill delivery and its own pitch types (including rise balls, drop balls and screwballs). Choose which pitch types you see in the same tab.

Audio & Display › Stadium picks the setting: Stadium 1 is the whole ballpark, scaled up (200 ft fence); Stadium 2 is life-size seats around the outfield and fence.

Can I practice only blocking, or only framing?

Yes. Pitching › Dirt balls (blocking) sets the share of pitches that bounce in front of the plate, from 0% (a pure receiving and framing day) to 100% (a blocking workout). The Location tab fine-tunes the strike-to-ball mix and how far off the plate balls and dirt balls go, and Pitching › Fastball mph sets the speed range from 45–55 up to 85–95 mph.

How do I watch a replay?

Click a thumbstick, or press REPLAY on the technique card, after any pitch. Watch it from the first-base side, third-base side, out front or over the umpire's shoulder, at full, half or quarter speed. The last five pitches are kept while the app is open. Catcher › Auto replay can play the replay automatically after every pitch, after dirt balls only, or never.

Can I turn off the voices or the music?

Yes, in Audio & Display: Voice calls (the pitch call before the windup and the coaching lines), Umpire calls, Music and Music volume. A spoken location call (“high”, “low left”…) can be switched on under Location › Call the location.

Does the app collect my data?

No. Your settings, hand calibration and last session's score are saved only on your headset, and the app sends nothing to us. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it saved. Meta checks your purchase when the app starts. The details are in our privacy policy.

I have a problem with my purchase or want a refund

Purchases, payments and refunds are handled by Meta through the Meta Horizon Store, so please use Meta's purchase history and refund options for your account. If the app won't start after you bought it, check that the headset is signed in to the Meta account that bought it, then contact us if it still won't open.
